This
year the Challenge Sports Scholarships are presented
in Honor and Memory
of Myles Freeberg.
Myles was hit by a
distracted driver July 7, 2010 and pronounced dead the next day. Myles was
the last male Valedictorian candidate in the class of 2011 at Viera High
School in Viera FL and would have applied for the Challenge Sports
Scholarship this year. Myles played soccer for Viera High School and
competitive soccer with both Space Coast United Soccer Club and Melbourne
Eau Gallie United Soccer Club.
Myles
was a wonderful, intelligent, young man, a great student, a huge Gator fan,
and a true friend. He loved soccer, video games, and hanging out with his
friends. Although his quiet nature belied his competitive spirit, he had a
tremendous sense of sportsmanship for
the game and its participants.
A few days after his death a bunch of soccer friends, planned a pick up
game to celebrate his life. It was suppose to be just a few kids getting
together - it ended up being over 100
kids from 7 different local high schools came who knew him and it turned
into a true tribute to him and his love for soccer. They showed up with T-
shirts with his Nickname- "Myles- the Wall" and #6 (his number over the
years)
Besides a "Myles the Wall" embroidered
patch, many people purchased "Smiles for Myles" wristband and/or have run or
walked the Miles for Myles 5K which has assisted the funding of a non profit
organization in Myles' name. This organization has provided scholarships
for local students this year and will in the future. Myles life has touched
many and will continue to do so!
